A hugely important campaign has been launched to encourage the Government to recognise the severe difficulties some Head and Neck Cancer patients undergo with the care of their oral health before, during and after treatment. This campaign is arguing for all head & neck cancer patients to be exempt from dental charges, something we should all support in my opinion. Here is a link to the website to add your name to the lobby group. Click on Campaign for free dental care I hope many of you will do so.

Head and neck Folk

Both David Hamilton and Peter Bridgman (OC Members) having been working to create a new sub-group to Headstart. They have called it Head and Neck Folk. The idea is to create a buddy system for patients, and to encourage more patient involvement in the various trust groups in our area. More is explained on their new website, click here for more detail.

The mission statement from this group is below:

" The Head and Neck Folk (www.headandneckfolk.co.uk) website and support group provides a platform and conduit for those who have been effected, one way or another with Head and Neck Cancer, and who now wish to give some of their time in support of those who have followed them down a similar pathway.

Members of the support group are available, under the direction of the Clinician professionals, to provide support, buddying, advice, and tips to those seeking their assistance. Whilst working as a sub-committee of Headstart they also identify and provide members to sit on Cancer Network, local and national committees. Members, who are all volunteers, are committed to assisting wherever possible in the recovery phase of the Patient Pathway of Head and Neck Cancer."

Macmillan

Yes, it's finally happened. The much anticipated opening of the Macmillan Cancer Support information and drop-in centre has finally become a reality.

The Centre is packed with absolutely every single piece of literature one could possibly require, but not only that. It is staffed by the most charming and helpful of support nurses in the form of Beth Garcia, along with her fabulous team of volunteers, one in particulr being the ever so helpful Russ. There is also an ultra modern private consulting room, which is fully sound proofed and equipped with tea and coffee etc to provide some refreshment. The Centre is open to anyone who is affected by cancer, not just patients but, relatives, carers, and friends as well. The direct number for the Centre is 01342 414369 and it is open Monday-Fiday from 10-4pm except bank holidays.

The official opening was on March 28, and there was quite a crowd, with a marvellous spread, including the most amazingly beautifully decorated cake.
